Trendy Places to eat in Hong Kong

The Eater Hong Kong Heatmap: Where to Eat Right Now

Today we return to Hong Kong and focus on fourteen spots that are garnering serious buzz and acclaim. As was the case the last time around, blogger and criticJanice Leung, who runs e_ting the world based out of Hong Kong, has shared her picks for the hottest dining her city currently has to offer.

Among the picks are a couple of empire expansions from a new location of Tokyo’s Michelin-starred Sushi Yoshitake to a Hong Kong outpost of Mario Batali’s Las Vegas restaurant Carnevino. There’s also some new “rustic-hip Creole” in Restoration and plenty of new tapas such as 22 Ships.

RESTORATION
Restoration opened in the fall serving a Creole menu from chef Jack Carson’s native New Orleans. As Leung says, “this rustic-hip Creole opening has all the kids from stateside jumping for joy.”

SUSHI YOSHITAKE
Tokyo’s beloved (and Michelin-starred) Sushi Yoshitake has arrived in Hong Kong “serving melt-in-your-mouth sushi and credit-card-melting checks.” This eight-seat location was just recently awarded its own two Michelin stars.[Photo]

ST. BETTY
There’s a “new chef, new menu, new sommelier, new everything at Alan Yau’s revamped restaurant. Behind the stoves with the seasonal, locally-aware menu is the highly acclaimed Shane Osborn” — formerly seen heading the kitchen at London’s two-Michelin-starred Pied à Terre.[Photo]

22 SHIPS
British chef Jason Atherton opened this tapas bar this past fall. There are no reservations accepted at this casual spin on fine dining and therefore “queues have been encouragingly ridiculous.”[Photo]

VI COOL
Spanish chef Sergi Arola brings more tapas to Hong Kong with the opening of Vi Cool, a casual restaurant with hot and cold tapas, Catalan-style pizza and more.[Photo]

Rick Bayless alum William Otis “takes the helm at this hip Mexican, with taco takeout out front, restaurant (that turns into a club at night) out back. Deliciously lethal cocktails.”[Photo]

CAFE DEADEND
Cafe Deadend and its sister bakery Po’s Atelier are both newcomers to “a revived pocket of the city dubbed ‘PoHo.’ Great coffee called the ‘dirty double’ – double shot of espresso floating daintily on a glass of cold milk; stir it up and you’ve missed the point.”[Photo]

LARIS
Having already built a sizable Shanghai restaurant empire, Australian chef/restaurateur David Laris hits Hong Kong with what is billed as “modern dining with an Australian touch.”[Photo]

THE SALTED PIG
Leung notes that this “pork-centric bistro” is well-priced — and its menu reveals its commitment to pork with charcuterie platters and “porker feasts.”[Photo]
